David Singleton's Diary

Yesterday at the Vicarage : The Betsy, London.

I am writing this diary on Friday morning. The information in these pages is thus already out of date. I spent yesterday, considering the need to clear the air with Dr Unnecessary in LA. This morning he has sent me a 'Bitch Slap' email – addressing the same problem in reverse, and changing my perception of what follows:

I began yesterday morning by making a conscious and intentional decision to commit myself one hundred percent to Dr Unnecessary’s role in translating the Vicar Chronicles to a TV series format. It was explained to me that his role was to interpret my vision. I therefore sent him an email with a possible view of the series, and asking how my diaries on the various events they wish to cover would be changed or dramatized for television.

Dr Unnecessary’s email response completed shattered my faith and destroyed my day. It contained two points. The first was, in essence, that he saw no reason to reconsider the format for the show, and the second was that there was no point in offering creative suggestions, as no-one would listen.

I admire Dr Unnecessary’s frankness and honesty. This is clearly his honest opinion of the situation. Television is a world he knows well.

It does, however, leave me completely confused.

I stand by the total commitment to Dr Unnecessary that I made this morning, while wondering why I need an interpreter, who does not wish to interpret, and who does not believe that anyone wants to listen. A strange ally.

This process is testing my trust to the limit. One of the darkest and most infuriating days since the project began.
